WHAT IS AAUW?
AAUW was founded in 1881 on the conviction that education is key to achieving equity for women. Although education is the primary focus, AAUW has always spoken out on vital social, economic, and political issues. Please visit the national web site at:

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO JOIN?
Women and men who hold a bachelor's or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
WHAT DOES MEMBERSHIP COST?
Dues are $62 annually (national $45, state $8, local $9).
WHEN DOES AAUW MEET?
The Waverly Branch meets monthly
September through May, the third Thursday of each month. Most of our meetings begin with an optional dinner at 5:30 p.m., a program at 6:15 p.m., followed by a short business meeting and adjournment around 7:15 p.m.
WHAT DOES AAUW CONTRIBUTE LOCALLY?
During election years, the Waverly Branch co-hosts political debates featuring Iocal and state candidates.
Waverly AAUW sponsors the spring Honors Banquet for Waverly-Shell Rock High School.
WHAT DOES AAUW CHAMPION ON A NATIONAL LEVEL?
AAUW condemns all forms of discrimination and supports gender-fair education, civil rights, family and medical leave, equal pay for equal work, reproductive choice, affirmative action, and access to health care. AAUW members work to remove obstacles that hold women back.
HOW DOES AAUW ACT FOR EQUITY?
If equity is at issue, AAUW is there:
Lobbying legislators.
Raising money to fund research.
Publishing ground-breaking studies.
Spearheading community action projects.
Launching voter education campaigns.
Mentoring women and girls.
Working with educators to better engage girls in learning.
Awarding fellowships and grants through the AAUW Educational Foundation.
Providing legal support to fight sex discrimination through the Legal Advocacy Fund.

Dr. Johnathan Melville, assistant professor of biologyat Wartburg Colege, will speak about current research on biological factors associated with gender differences in intelligence.

"Music Education Now"
Jason Weinberger, Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony Music Director and a passionate advocate for music education, has devoted much of his professional work to the presentation of music to or with young people. He will discuss current issues in music education.

"Islam and Women"
Amina Mahmood, graduate student in counseling psychology at the University of Iowa, will present information about perspectives and experiences of Muslim women.

"Ride On!
Women of all walks of life are taking to the open road on two wheels. Karris Golden, writer and editor for the communications and marketing office at Wartburg College, will give us an introduction to Women's involvement in this popular recreational activity.
May 17, 2007
"Iowa Women Pioneers in Science"
Dr. Tanya Zanish-Belcher, associate professor and head, special collections dept. and university archives at Iowa State University, will give a presentation on wormen's history with a specific focus on Iowa women and their contributions to science.
Programs for September-December have not yet been selected.
